At the Lake

Lake Michigan.

After enjoying a the Reformation Day Faire, we journeyed north, to visit with a church where Dad was doing some pulpit supply. Our kind hosts took us to explore Lake Michigan one afternoon. The air was certifiably nippy. And since our photographer happened to accompany us, we had a portrait session. : ) We had a wonderful time exploring the countryside.

All bundled up with Daddy.

The hotel of all hotels.

Running on the sand.

Our dear Mother.

Mom and Sons.

Walking.

Little people and big people.

Balancing on the rocks.

Exploring.

These pics totally reminded me of Anne of Green Gables....on the beach with the White Sands hotel in the background.

Do you girls sew most of your skirts/blouses? If you buy them somewhere please tell me where!! It is hard to find nice timeless skirts that look nice and are comfortable for everyday wear I find.

These are great pictures! Lake Michigan must be a very beautiful lake, I've never been there before. It would be a wonderful experience to go there, though!

Amazing, how beautiful that area is. It could almost replace the California coast.... except for being "certifiably nippy" much more of the year. Hey, there was even a bit of surf running! The only two times I ever saw that lake (once at Evanston, just north of Chicago, the other the extreme top right corner in Northern Michigan) the whole lake was like a millpond. Rather uninteresting. So glad Peter was able to be with you all, too. You have missed him so (and he you, I doubt not). Thanks for the great report.....

Dear Jamie,

We were thinking exactly the same thing as you! Maybe they did film the White Sand's Hotel here in WI. We'll have to watch the movie again and compare buildings. : )

You asked about where we find skirts and blouses. It is a combination of very sweet friends who pass things our direction, thrift stores, sewing, and the occasional gift certificate from grandma.

The skirt I'm wearing was a friend's grandmother's and was probably from the early '90s. Sarah's skirt is from other friends (and already passed through us older Serven girls) from the 70's or 80's. Still plenty of wear! : } My sister Beth, who is lovely and tall, has a harder time finding ready made skirts, but if you keep an eye out for them, you can still find them (it depends on what is in fashion that year).

I like to make skirts too. They are so simple: front, back, waistband, zipper and voila! You have a skirt. Then you can put on a ruffle, extra stitching, ribbon, trim, etc, to the edge to add some class. Hope these ideas help.

Dear Phoebe,

Lake Michigan is our introduction to the Great Lakes, but if the others are anything like it, we're hooked! I hope we can take a tour of the 'lake district' someday.

Mr. Jesch,

When we first moved to MO we were on the hunt for a ocean replacement. We visited numerous lakes, streams, rivers, and ponds, even the Atlantic ocean (near VA and SC) and just couldn't find anything to replace our glorious CA central coast. That is, until we visited WI last year. It was perfect!

We found our 'beach' at Lake Michigan: waves, cold wind, dunes, sand, rocks--the only thing missing is tide pools. : ) I'm sure there is some variety on the shores, depending where you visit. The area we visited is not intensely inhabited, so it made for a excellent CA Beach Fix. : ) We had a fabulous time with Peter. What a treat.

Rebecca,

Wow! That hotel is HUGE! Beautiful pictures and it looks like y'all had a WONDERFUL time. :)

The picture of you and that little boy looks like a picture from the 1940s'.... Especially the coats and hats you're wearing! ;)

Dear Johanna,

Yes, the hotel was quite enormous. The Lobby was probably 4 or 5 stories high inside. Glad you enjoyed the pictures.

Yes, Miss Rebecca, I can certainly relate to having to find your patch of ocean! I've never lived far from salt water (half a mile, here), but the times I've been more than twenty miles or so I did miss it. Much as I love desert and mountains, there is something about being near the seashore that is irreplaceable. In considering a move to some other part of the country, I sometimes wonder how much I'd miss the coast, should I relocate far from it. While Wisconsin is a bit far from Troy, it is close enough to make a visit possible (though doubtfully a weekly occurrence.......). I am so glad you all have found an "Ersatzkueste" to delight in together.
