But oh, so sweet. I...Oh boy, them's fightin words!! But oh, so sweet. I've known some families that have consciously made music (instruments and/or voice) a significant part of their family culture, and there is ALWAYS a strong sense of unity within those families. I've been convinced that it was the rise of media, in the forms of radio, records, and later television, that have led to the general loss of music in family culture. "Making your own" brings the individuals together in time, space, and purpose in a way that merely engaging in prepared media never can.

For a family to deliberately and proactively develop music as a part of their culture is to set themselves apart from, and above, the general culture in a powerful way. I believe Mr. Swanson's call to include music as one of the basic areas of focus in education is a call for foundational change. I laughed when he said "oh, and if there's time remaining, we'll do some math". Interesting thing is, music can be used as a means of teaching maths, as well!! They're both numbers! (let's see, now, how can one work a quadratic equation on piano, anyway?? I'm sure there's a way, somehow..... and even if not, it would be great fun trying)Nick Jeschhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12590045434710159571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10615413.post-34984456918279468072008-07-05T21:36:00.000-05:002008-07-05T21:36:00.000-05:00I had downloaded and listened to that program (I d...I had downloaded and listened to that program (I download to my phone and listen when I wake up in the middle of the night -- a wonderful time for reflection). How refreshing to hear a father speak so positively about the rewards of singing as a family in worship, let alone the blessing it is to the heart of God.

I could not help but be reminded of my own dear father, as we rode down the highway or busied ourselves around the house, booming out with a psalm or hymn or spiritual song. Then we would all join, wherever we were, adding harmonies and sometimes descants.

It was much later when I learned to read music and add "proper" harmony, but the sweetness of those improvised songs lingers now, decades later. And now our grandchildren love to sing together just as much as we did "back then"!

God bless Brother Serven and the clan as you spread the joy of singing as a family!!

Mrs. Frodge in FL
www.clearlyseenfamily.blogspot.comBonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06989322941825833534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10615413.post-61830488554248806362008-07-03T23:25:00.000-05:002008-07-03T23:25:00.000-05:00I appreciated hearing that. Music does have an incredible influence on a family and how you go about it has the potential to strengthen or weaken family bonds.

Your father painted a vision for us of how to pursue it without compromise and to the glory of God.
With much thanks,
KellyMiss Kelly & Miss Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07443976795995137313noreply@blogger.com
